Local History

« The attractiveness of this area is reflected in the population density of its towns and its wealth… the variety of crops grown … the abundance of wine is clear, given the number of wooden barrels bigger than the houses. »
This was written by Strabone in 30 B.C. and describes the Oltrepò lands, in which vines and wine have determined the landscape and the traditions and culture of its inhabitants ever since. Oltrepò Pavese is one of the few parts of the grape-growing world which has its roots in pre- Roman times, particularly in the foothills, where the temperate position above the fog and humidity of the plain has always provided the perfect place for grow vines. Over the last two millennia, its strategic position at the crossroads of the main routes of communication has led local wine producers to grow more and more vines and to acquire new techniques which result in what now constitutes an almost unique mastery. The ‘Stradella Spur’, the promontory of  hills overlooking the plain, at the centre of which our winery is located, is the part of Oltrepò where its ancient traditions have been most closely maintained and it is here that the two historic Oltrepò Pavese wines, Buttafuoco and Sangue di Giuda, are produced.

Numerous historical accounts show how much these wines were appreciated by the humble pilgrims and merchants who travelled along the various Via Francigena routes through the area, eating the typical plate of soup accompanied by a very welcome bowl of wine; likewise important figures, including popes, who would pause on their journey with their entourage of servants.

Nowadays Oltrepò vineyards still occupy 14,000 hectares, almost all Denomination of Origin; Like ourselves, many companies which have always maintained their strong links with history and traditions, produce unique wines which are closely linked to the land and have strong personalities, making them suitable representatives of the true ‘Made in Italy’ in the world.
